Initial bets are made before five card draw is dealt to ensure that there is some money or chips in the pot. The deal begins with the small blind player and continues around the table until all players have been dealt in. Let’s look at what determines who bets and when they bet during five card draw:
The dealer. The dealer’s button of dealer’s chip is used to mark who the dealer is for the game. With each consecutive hand of five card draw, the deal passes to the player to the left of the dealer in a clockwise fashion. The player who is the dealer is known as the player who is “on the button”.
The small blind. To the left of the dealer’s button you will find the player who is known as the small blind. It is this player who will place the initial bet into the pot. The small blind bets the minimum. The big blind. To the left of the small blind sits the big blind. This player must bet an initial bet which is double the bet of the small blind, or double the minimum.
Beyond the initial small and big blind bets, action in the first round of betting will begin with the player who is seated to the left of the big blind. This player (third from the dealer button) can fold, call, or raise. It is only after play has returned around the table to the big blind that a player can check. The big blind has the option to check, raise or fold. After all players have made their first bets, remaining players can discard any or all of their cards and draw new ones. Those players who keep all of their original cards are known to be “standing pat”.
The second round of betting begins with the player who is seated to the left of the dealer button, and this player can either bet, check, or fold their hand. If this player checks or folds, the next player can have the option to do the same. If this player bets, the next player can raise, call, or fold.
Once all bets are in, the showdown will determine the five card draw winner. The last person to act during the game is the first person to show his or her cards during the showdown. Traditional poker hand rankings will determine the five card draw winner.
