  • When To Bluff In 5 Card Draw Poker

Perhaps more than in any other game of poker, a five card draw player must be well-versed and practiced in the art of the bluff in order to enjoy the most success from the game. Being a well-paid five card draw player means that you can effectively bluff with a pair of twos! Bluff or not, five card draw poker is a game where the winning hand doesn’t can often be a surprise, which makes this game a buffer’s dream. However, a well-orchestrated bluff requires some bluffing skill – and if you don’t have that skill, your five card draw bluff can cost you big time. Let’s look at how to bluff appropriately in five card draw.

Knowing What Your Opponents Hold Before You Bluff

There are three bits of knowledge about your opponents’ hands that you need in five card draw before you begin your five card draw bluff. First of all, you must look at your opposition’s initial bets. Do they bet aggressively? If so, your opponents’ might have a strong hand (or think they do) or they could be bluffing you. How many cards do they discard and draw? Again, if they take only one card or stand pat, they have a strong hand or (again) they are bluffing. What kind of bet do they make in the final betting round? Do they bet strong because they have a strong hand? Knowing this information is important and can help you determine if they are bluffing, or if they have a better hand than you and will be able to call your own bluff. If you are playing with a group of players that you are familiar with, then by all means, watch your regular group for signs that they are bluffing, or know the familiar “tells” that they give off when they have a strong hand. This will help you “up” your bluff in five card draw.

The Most Often Used Five Card Draw Bluff (Ever)

The all-time favorite standby bluff in five card draw is the act of standing pat. This means simply that you take no cards during the draw. When a player stands pat, the opposition has reason to believe that the cards in his or her hand are strong (after all, they don’t need any help building a better hand). Effective bluff? Standing pat as a bluff can work well sometimes, but it can’t be used often, or else your opposition will know that you are bluffing every time you get a good standing pat hand (which can also work to your advantage – if they think you’re bluffing and you’re not, then they will keep raising the pot, and you have a good chance of taking it).

    The Reverse Bluff

There are times that you may wish to bluff in the other direction to make the other players around the five card draw table think that your hand is not as strong as it actually is. Perhaps you have four of a kind which is very hard to beat, but you take one card anyway – making the other players around you assume that you are trying to build a straight or a flush or a full house. In this instance, your opponents won’t put much stock in your drawing to your flush, straight, or full house (little do they know that you have the game in the bag already). This is a great way to get others to stay in the game alongside you, building the pot, and increasing your winnings. With all bluffs, mix things up and never become predictable so that you will be a successful bluffer when you decide to pull this type of trick out of your “poker skills” bag.
